The attached palliative care ethical paper was completed for NSG 385 Palliative & End of Life Care Across the Lifespan.  For this assignment, I identified an ethical issue that occurs when caring for terminally-ill patients.  The issued I identified for this assignment was the voluntary stopping of eating or drinking (VSED) among terminally-ill patients. VSED is a well-known ethical issue with polarizing viewpoints.  For this paper, I provided a summary of the ethical issue and provided a comprehensive analysis of the conflicting viewpoints. Additionally, I explored the use of the ethical decision-making process as a framework to follow when faced with an ethical dilemma. In reviewing the ethical dilemma, I incorporated the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence when using clinical decision making skills.  This exemplar demonstrates my achievement of UNCW's student learning outcomes 1 and 2.  I met outcome one by utilizing the ethical decision-making process to voice my support for VSED, which values the nursing principles of autonomy and human dignity.  I met outcome two by demonstrating my clinical reasoning reasoning skills and professional values by utilizing the ethical decision-making process to make the most informed decision when faced with an ethical dilemma.
