This class concentrates primarily on the rise and fall of state-level societies in the Near East, north Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. We will emphasize some of the classic early state-level civilizations of Eurasia, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. The main goal of this class is to understand the interplay of state-level civilizations in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf regions. To fulfill this goal, the class is structured as both a lecture and discussion class, with small-group activities and many writing assignments. This course counts for the Writing Intensive and Information Literacy requirements in the University Studies curriculum.
