What is Respondus 4.0?

Respondus 4.0 is an assessment tool for creating, converting, and managing Word or text-based exams that can be published directly to Canvas.

This software allows you to import multiple-choice, true-false, essay, fill in the blank, fill in multiple blanks, matching, ordering, jumbled sentences, and multiple answer questions all from one file. To work the magic behind Respondus 4.0, the questions must be organized in a format that is acceptable to Respondus, and the file must be stored in one of the following formats:

- Plain text (.txt)
- Rich-text (.rtf)
- MS Word (.doc and .docx)
- Tab/Comma-delimited (.csv) format.

⏰ Saving time with Respondus 4.0

Importing Questions: Questions for an entire exam can be imported in Respondus 4.0 in minutes.

Working Offline: If there are times you are without internet, you can still create your exams offline with Respondus.

Publishing to Canvas: The publish feature is part of the “magic” of Respondus 4.0. Once an exam is created, it takes less than a minute to publish an assessment to one or more courses in Canvas.

Getting Started with Respondus 4.0 Checklist

Within the "Helpful Tutorials" section below, you will find additional resources to help you get started with Respondus 4.0 but here is a quick checklist of the tasks you will need to do to access Respondus 4.0 at UNCW successfully:

Step 1: Install Respondus 4.0 💻

To obtain a Respondus 4.0 license, please email UNCW's Learning Management Systems (LMS) Team at lms@uncw.edu to get started.

Important Note: Respondus 4.0 can only be downloaded on Windows OS devices. If your device is an Apple device, please email elearning@uncw.edu.

Step 2: Convert Word Documents into Respondus Format 📝

Before you are able to upload your exam in Respondus 4.0, you have to convert your exam into Respondus Format. Please check out our Respondus formatting page to get started.

Important Note: you as the instructor are responsible for converting your exams into this format, but you can always email us at elearning@uncw.edu for additional assistance.

📍DEeL Tip: If you have images that you would like to add to your exam, we suggest putting the images in after your exam is in Canvas. Respondus 4.0 will not bring your images over when you import them into the software.

Step 3: Import Questions into Respondus 4.0 ⬆️

Now that your exam is in Respondus format, the next step is to import your exam into Respondus 4.0. To get started, please check out our "Importing and Publishing Questions" page.

📍DEeL Tip: If it is your first time using Respondus 4.0, it does take some practice to successfully import questions into Respondus 4.0. To ensure you have enough time, please provide yourself at least two days prior to the exam start date to upload your exams into Canvas.

Things to Consider

To save yourself from some technical headaches, here are some things to keep in mind when using Respondus 4.0:

Tip 1: Work Smarter, Not Harder🔒

If you have to build your exam from scratch, we recommend building your exam directly in your Canvas course instead of using the Respondus 4.0 software. We only recommend using Respondus 4.0 if you already have a Word document version of your exams available.

Tip 2: PC Friendly ☁️

Unfortunately, Respondus 4.0 can only be installed on Windows devices. If you would like to use Respondus 4.0, but you only have Apple devices, please email elearning@uncw.edu.

Tip 3: Respondus 4.0 is not Respondus Lockdown Browser ⚠️

Respondus 4.0 is different from Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor. Respondus LockDown Browser (RLB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas, while Respondus 4.0 is a tool for uploading exams into Canvas.

Tip 4: Plan ahead ⏰

With any new tool, it takes time to find your rhythm with it. To ensure you provide yourself enough time to work out any potential technical issues with Respondus 4.0, please upload your exam at least two days prior to the start time of the exam. It is all about planning ahead and helping out your future self!
