Who can apply?

A student who has a GPA of 3.2 or better over the first 74 hours, and who has completed at least 30 hours at UNCW, is eligible to apply for admission to Departmental Honors.

Departmental Honors requires that a student completes six (6) hours of honors work as XXX 499 over the last two or three semesters, with a maximum of three semester hours in any one semester. Departmental Honors may begin at the beginning of the second semester of the junior year (on completion of 74 hours) or at the beginning of the first semester senior year.

In order to graduate with Departmental Honors, a student must successfully complete the program and have a 3.2 quality point average over all college work at the time of graduation. A student who does not retain an overall 3.2, however, may still receive credit for the honors project hours.

The Application for Departmental Honors must be completed before the end of drop/add in the semester you wish to begin your honors project.

The Application for Departmental Honors requires the following elements:

Identification info (name, email, 850, cell number, major, graduation date, etc.)
Details and timeline of your project (project title, short description, number of semesters, course heading, whether conference presentations or international travel are involved)
The name, department, and email of your faculty supervisor
The names/emails of your committee members (1 from within your department, 1 from outside)
- The committee members don't have to be set in stone, but it is a wise choice to ask them before you list their name on your form
The name/email of your department chair or program coordinator
